Yes, it is that time of the year again when the new breed of Formula 1 cars are revealed to the world ahead of pre-season testing and the beginning of the Championship in Australia. Every year there are a team of people from all over the world left to analyse these new cars and tell you, the fans, what to expect from the coming season. I can’t do that. Pagani have just released pictures and information of their forthcoming Huayra Roadster. Based on the coupe launched in 2011, the roadster offers more of the same Italian magic while allowing a cool breeze to keep your hair windswept. Oddly, the Roadster is 80 kg lighter than the coupe and even more powerful. The weight reduction comes from further refinement and extensive use of their composite material; Carbo-Titanium, a mix of carbon fibre and titanium. The SUV, or Sports Utility Vehicle, has evolved dramatically over the past few years as have the people who buy them. The SUV used to be a premium four-wheel drive jeep but now as more affordable smaller versions are becoming available; their sales have soared. In 2015 the SUV was the most popular body style in Europe. That is the first time ever that sales numbers for traditional bestsellers, the compact and supermini, were surpassed by any other body type. In Ireland, the best-selling car of 2016 was the Hyundai Tucson while the first two weeks of 2017 saw one in four new cars registered were SUVs. Yes, in the worst kept secret of recent times, Valterri Bottas has been chosen by Mercedes AMG F1 to replace their World Champion Nico Rosberg who decided to hang up his helmet after his victorious 2016 season. In other shocking news, Felipe Massa has returned from the shortest ever retirement to his Williams team, as they wanted an experienced driver familiar to them for the uncertain year of many rule changes ahead.

The Detroit Auto Show is currently taking place in, yeah you guessed it, Detroit! This annual event is the first auto show of the year and manufacturers are always eager to show off what they have been working on. This year, Audi have delighted us with their new Q8 concept. Combining the spaciousness of an SUV with the emotional lines of a coupe, this is a concept. However, according to Audi we will see a production version come to the market in 2018. What? A desirable Kia for car enthusiasts? Yes, you heard me right! Kia have unveiled their new 2018 model, named the Stinger at the North American International Auto Show. They are claiming that this is the car to redefine the Kia brand. Good start. The Stinger is a sports saloon that aims to compete with the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class. Ambitious.
Lamborghini is an icon, and their flagship supercar has always been the one to have on your eight year old self’s bedroom wall. They have never been the best at making the best driving cars, that would be their Italian and German counterparts. However, from the Muira to the Countach and currently the Aventador, they are the epitome of children’s dream cars. So when it comes to reinventing their Aventador for its mid life facelift, Lamborghini have to be very careful about bettering it while still retaining the madness that makes it so appealing to youngsters.
Opel have released pictures of their latest saloon, the Insignia Grand Sport as well as some information on the car that will be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The Insignia is Opel’s largest saloon and is pitched against the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat and Mazda 6 while also trying to grab the attention of those looking for a smaller German executive saloon such as a 3-Series or a C-Class.
